Bowling with YSO and SO

The first big assignment for Issues in Education has been submitted! I don't have any big plans for the weekend, but I do hope to get a little ahead in my classes, what with VBS in the mornings. I spent a decent portion of the day on my paper and I don't feel like talking about the paper right now. Fortunately, that wasn't the only thing that happened today.

(It's still related to classes, so no TC.) Today was the first day of volunteering with the Youth Special Olympics and the Special Olympics groups. Each group has bowling every Friday and since my schedule was free, I made it a part of my service project for the Intro to Spec Ed class. Volunteering today was definitely fun. There were only three youth today, so I bowled a game with the athletes and made side talk (it turned out to be one of my best games in a while). There were many athletes with the adult crowd, so it turned into a happening night. I helped with a little aluminum ramp the bowling alley has for individuals who need extra assistance. Everyone seemed friendly and the coordinators appreciated my being there.

I know it may seem contrary to what I've said before, but today, I definitely appreciated having Intro to Spec Ed as a summer course. My logic is that every education student has to take Intro to Spec Ed, which will always have the service project, which includes 15 hours of volunteering with individuals with disabilities. The bowling that I did goes year-round and since it is in Maryville, I would figure that a lot of college students would come and help out - perhaps more volunteers than what they would need. So, by taking it as a summer course, there are fewer students in the class AND since it's an online course, some of the classmates don't live in town. (The main point that I haven't said yet is that if I'm doing volunteer hours, I don't want to just be sitting somewhere with more volunteers than tasks. Not having a bunch of other people means that I get to do stuff.)

To be honest, there were any other big highlights outside of volunteering and the class paper. In terms of the holiday, I was thinking of celebrating Flag Day, but I ran out of free time for that. Maybe tomorrow. I did end up celebrating a different daily holiday, but you're just going to have to trust me on this one because I don't feel like typing it out.
