A Class-y Monday (okay, the pun's old)

Hey again. Well, today pretty much focused on class since I had my debate and activity with Issues in Education. As you probably could have picked up on before, I was nervous about the debate, particularly since part of what I had to say had to be in response to the other side (aka I couldn't prep for it beforehand). I thought that I did decently, although my partner said that I kept my composure and looked in control the whole time. (I'll just go on record and say that my partner kicked butt and had amazing research and factoids ready.) The professor was impressed with all four of us and was surprised to hear that none of us had debated before. I know it's not using my own words, but here is what the professor had to say:

Impressive fluency, all four of you.  I was even more impressed with your use of logic.  BRAVO!  J

 I realize that this isn’t easy.  I’m very proud of you for doing this – you really impressed me.  You are far better debaters than I was my first time up.  You did yourselves proud.  You should feel really good about what you did this evening.  I’m still picking my jaw up off the floor. 

So... yeah. All four of us were quite ready to be done with the debate and the opposition brought up a lot of good points. I was the closest one to a "squirrel argument" since I brought some things out of left field. Oh well. My partner and I were both glad to have debated first because we could watch the Liberty debate without worry. It might be because I was watching from the outside, but the Liberty debate felt a little more scattered. Their topic was gun control in schools, which is definitely an emotional topic that can quickly polarize people. Fortunately, everyone involved treated the topic with the respect that it deserved. My activity followed the debate on gun control and it was leading discussions about different scenarios. It was certainly a deep subject and it made me think back to Red Lake. To be honest though, I was much more invested in the debate so when it came to the activity, I basically thought "yeah, this won't be a problem".

After that, I just chilled on a Google Hangout again. I have a feeling it's going to be different when I visit Minnesota, not to mention during the school year. Oh well, I'll make that work when it gets to that point.
