Picnics and Helium Balloons

Hey everyone,

So after I posted yesterday's post, I realized that I forgot to mention the daily holidays. It was pretty late so I didn't want to go back into the entry (especially since it had the 1000 most used words challenge). Ever since I made it a point to celebrate holidays daily, I've stumbled across more of them "in the wild". Yesterday was Shavout, which I learned from a student of mine who is Jewish is the celebration of when Moses received the 10 Commandments from God. Sure, Shavout was on my list of holidays, but I was able to have a nice discussion with the student rather than simply reading it on a page.

The holiday I did set out to celebrate yesterday was National Educational Bosses' Week. As I said yesterday, things are kind of stressful around the building and the staff really doesn't want to waste time with unneeded... stuff. After one of the meetings, I made sure to find my supervisor and thank him for all that he does for the other RCs and me. I feel like some of the stress has been lifted now that today is done with, but at the same time, we are running a gauntlet until commencement.

Today was a good day for a picnic. That may be a little random for an opening sentence, but the lunch today was a "BBQ" (the quotes are because it was catered) out on the lawn and it was great weather. We also had the badminton net up and so I got to celebrate today, which is National Employee Health & Fitness Day. (I may have also celebrated another holiday at lunch, which was National Chocolate Chip Day... but they balance out, right?)

We had the first on-campus interview today, but I don't want to write about it, because I do feel like that would be professionally appropriate.

This evening, some students thought it would be cool to have a send-off for the seniors by writing notes to put inside helium balloons and then sending them off into the atmosphere. I had to work the desk, but it seems like the event was well-received. The two co-workers who are leaving this year also had a send-off balloon and one of them got a nice video of everyone releasing their balloons.

Later in the evening, I got to just sit and hang out with two co-workers. We just talked and shared stories and laughed. It feels like it's been a while since I took part in spontaneous hanging out in the building, so it was a nice change of pace. I do want to be more deliberate in the future about having down time with co-workers to strengthen a friendship.

Unfortunately, I'm kind of in a bad rut when it comes to going to bed on time. It's probably for the best then for me to just wrap this entry up early. I hope everyone has a great Thursday! DFTBA
