Spring Break 2013 - Day 1

WHOOO SPRING BREKA!!! I'M OUT PARTYING ADN WILLL IGNORE THIS STUPID BLOG UNTIL IG ET BACK FROM ALL THE PARTYING!!! WHOOOO!!!

...Okay, not really. I am on Spring Break, but I do still plan to blog everyday to keep the habit going. I probably will focus these entries more on what happened in a particular day, but you never know.

Now that the day is said and done, I can safely say that it constantly improved throughout the day. The worst part was definitely waking up this morning and realizing that I needed to be in Kansas City about that moment at the latest. (AKA I couldn't pull myself out of bed at 5am.) So, I scrambled to pack my last clothes and get to the airport where I was fortunate enough to get onto the 12:15pm flight to the Twin Cities. The plane ended up being half-booked, so we were earlier than normal since we didn't spend as much time boarding/unloading.

I ended up going to the airport and flying in dress clothes since I knew there wasn't much time between landing and the wedding. It made me feel professional outside of half of my stuff being packed in a backpack. Anyway, after getting to Minneapolis for real and then waiting for my friends to slog through the busy curbside pick-up, we went straight to the hotel where the wedding was held at.

The wedding was for two college friends of mine that I've both known since freshman year. The groom lived on my floor freshman and sophomore year and is an extremely intelligent man, especially in the STEM fields. I'm pretty sure I got to know the bride through Campus Crusade and then later on by living on the same floor and then working with her as a CA. (On their wedding website, they said that they didn't know each other freshman year of college but had a couple of mutual friends. I think they meant my roommate and me or we were at least a part of that short list.) Since our college circle of friends got very tight in our undergrad career, two groomsmen and two bridesmaids were also a part of our circle. It's been kind of weird to see my college friends getting married but also involved in other weddings, but it's a good kind of weird.

Anyway, the service was pretty simple and it was held in the main lobby of the hotel/conference center they had booked. One thing that stuck out was what was referred to as a "Unity Wine Ceremony". To show that the two of them were becoming one, they first each had a glass of wine that they sipped from (the bride had white & the groom had red). Then they mixed the contents of both glasses together and each drank from it. I've commonly seen this symbolism at weddings with unity candles, but I like the new representation. It has the same meaning, but it's also classic since wine is classy. My sister told me once that she went to a wedding where the couple did a unity ceremony but with two colored jars of sand. Didn't sound very classy.

After the ceremony, there was a cocktail hour and then dinner & dancing on the lower floor. I ended up with the chicken dinner which was awesome and had quite a hefty portion size. Our college circle of friends were spread out between three tables, but all of the tables were right by the dance floor, which certainly worked out for us. Oh, and instead of clinking glasses to get the newlyweds to kiss, you would have to show the kiss as an example first. (So, one couple had an over-the-table grab-the-tie kiss that the newlyweds recreated.) Some people said they saw that at other weddings, but that was new to me.

To be honest, I'm kind of writing just to write right now. The dancing was a real fun time. The dance floor felt a little small considering the number of people at the dinner. There were classic wedding tunes (Electric Slide, Chicken Dance), there were current 'buzz' songs (Thrift Shop, Gangnam Style), and ones with more memories amongst our college group (Sandstorm, Sweet Caroline). Honestly, it was just a great evening. Once again, I am thankful for my college friends since they are always so accepting and welcoming when people come back to visit rather than saying "oh, you haven't talked with us in months. why should we talk to you now?".

Since I got a room at the hotel in advance, I stayed for the entire dance time without worrying about driving somewhere in the dark. A lot of the friends that came back to Minnesota (after leaving Minnesota post-graduation to move out to a job, that is) are flying out Sunday or Monday. Since I'm also flying out Monday, I know that I probably won't be able to connect up with them again this time around. To those of you that fall in that group that are reading this, it was great to see you and I hope we can catch up again soon.

It's about that time to wrap up. I'll try not to ramble so much tomorrow, but hey, at least I had a good day to blog about. Good night!
