Vitamin C Day & Country Music

Today's blog post got started before noon today... I just don't know what to feel...

The holiday for today is Vitamin C Day, so I made sure orange juice was part of my breakfast. I posted the holiday on Twitter and Kyle said he would listen to "Graduation" instead... (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTFu-7TLBK8) Oh Kyle... what a throwback. Don't worry, I already know what I'll be doing for tomorrow's holiday and it's not food-related. (Even though tomorrow is also National Deep Dish Pizza Day.)

So, it feels weird to say, but a piece of me likes bluegrass and country music. I don't put on country music stations, but there are a handful of songs that I like for one reason or another. Growing up in northern Minnesota, there were people in the area that raised crops or horses, and there were people who really liked country music. High school for me saw an influx in classical music and when people would ask, I told them that I would listen to any music outside of country and rap.

As I said before, there are a handful of songs that stick with me. One example is "There is No Arizona" by Jamie O'Neal, but I was introduced to that song via show choir, so I hear it in four-part vocals in a more rigid musical structure rather than the full country-style syncopation.  "Cotton Eye Joe", simply put, got played at every school dance and after a while, I had to admit, it had a good dancing beat. In a more random example, I hear "I've Got Friends in Low Places" coming from a wooden dummy rather than Garth Brooks (aka Terry Fator's performance with "America's Got Talent"). If anything, I enjoy the songs with a good beat and don't really listen to the ones that drone out about everything falling apart.

Well, that's where I'm at. I figure that musical tastes are allowed to grow and change and this is one example of that.

Have a great day!
