Hello all! I know I haven't blogged in a while (my last entry definitely gives off that tone), but right now, I'm on Spring Break! The students are all home/vacationing/with friends and family for a week, so it's time to just hide somewhere and do nothing, right? Well, a little bit. I was able to get plane tickets and I'm currently spending a week in Minneapolis! It's nice because I have more time to spend with friends I missed seeing back in January, and if I need to do stuff "during business hours" (like maybe visit my old bosses), I can do that too.
Getting here proved to be rather hectic... on Friday, I took a co-worker to the airport and while I was driving that (or shortly before that), I found out I had to drive some students to the airport because of various flights that screwed with the normal shuttle schedule. So, I took students to the airport and on the way back, it started to snow. Nothing too crazy, just a mix of snow and rain, but it kept coming. Since I didn't take one of the shuttle trips that left at 4:30pm, I helped close down the building and the snow kept getting worse. Around 11pm, I was doing laundry/dishes/packing when another co-worker was going to take some students to HyVee to return some stuff before leaving the next morning when her car was stuck in the parking lot from the snow. The students and the two of us got some shovels and were digging out a path to the street when my co-worker got the idea that we should just head out to the airport now rather than wait until 6am (a student had a flight at 8:15am) since the snow kept on coming. So, after checking all the various options, getting the students to pack up the co-worker's car, and getting my own belongings in order, we were off at 3am. The highways were pretty good although getting off main roads to go get gas or change drivers was a little bumpy. There was a point we were merging from one highway to another and we saw this convoy of 10-20 semi-trucks going in single file at like 25 miles per hour. It was kind of cool to see them go as one unit rather than later when some semis were zipping by a little too close since people were only going off of the parts of the time we could see the median. Anyway, we got to the airport safely, and after a 6-hour wait (the one student had a 8:15am but I had booked a 12:30pm flight with someone already planning on picking me up at 2pm), I got to Minneapolis where it hadn't snowed at all...
Anyway, here has been my agenda so far (I know people aren't really interested in this, but it's fun for me to think back on):
Day 0: Flights and First Nights
Fly into MSP
Get lunch/ice cream with friend at Big 10/Ben & Jerry's (being on campus was odd)
Went to Uptown to meet up with friends I'd be housing with
Watched some basketball
Went to awesome Italian restaurant owned/operated by friend's family
Came back for card games, Rock Band, and wine
Day 1: Awesome Not-Quite-so-Lazy Sunday
Church and brunch (Perkins by West Bank)
Watched basketball and did online stuff
Walked to Walker Art Museum, Explored Sculpture Garden, Played Frisbee (I can't wait for the pictures to go up)
Went to Rainbow to pick up supplies for the best grill-out ever!
Best Grill-out ever! (cheeseburgers with minced onions in french onion soup with two kinds of cheese, brats which ended up being doubly beer-battered, baked beans, fruit, cheetos... so good!)
Watched the Health Bill pass the House and caught up on CollegeHumor videos (the Internet here is... good!)
Day 2: Metro Transit and Musical Monday
Slept in
Navigated the bus system to the light rail and Midtown
Got Robotics photos printed at Target
Got shave and haircut (two bits... okay, not really)
Got back to Uptown House and hung out with friend talking to him about Robotics/Solar Car/Cash Cab
Quick Dinner of grilled turkey and cheese sandwiches
Drove to St Olaf for MusiCamp friend's junior recital
Awesome vocal and oboe recital (my friend sang, and both performers were a little nervous at first but both really good!)
Drove back (with cupcakes in hand...)
Watched Pixar shorts with friend (thank you Netflix)
I know the next few days will whisk by but honestly, it's been a great few days so far! I'm not sure what all I'll be doing during the daytime while I'm here (everyone here has 9-5 jobs or classes that take a similar schedule), but there are a number of things on the schedule: Wok with a bunch of friends tomorrow night, late-night appetizers with my old residents, an afternoon/evening trip to Eau Claire, lunch with a YA friend, and hopefully see some other people including my roommate for freshman/sophomore year.
Well, I am tired so I should hit the... couch. Here's to an awesome rest of Spring Break!
